Travel mosquito nets

A hotel, a guesthouse or a homestay bed is the most exposed bed you will sleep in. The window may not seal, and there is rarely a net already hung. A travel net is light enough to carry and quick to pitch, so the bed stops being a question. The choice turns on one thing: is there anything overhead to hang from?

When there is an anchor above

The Traccia is a single-point wedge. It pitches from one ceiling hook, headboard, picture rail or overhead branch and tensions over the pillow in under a minute, with no frame to assemble. Traccia Uno is 220 × 100 × 140 cm and packs to 240 g for one traveller; Traccia Due is 220 × 160 × 140 cm and packs to 320 g for two sharing a bed.

The wedge keeps the packed weight low and the footprint over the sleeping area. Carry a short length of cord for a room with no hook, and it hangs between two anchors just as well.

When there is nothing overhead

The Domo Pop is a freestanding pop-up dome. It erects itself from an internal sprung rim in seconds, stands on its own on the floor, mattress or bunk, and encloses a single sleeper on every side. It is 270 × 85 × 56 cm and packs to 600 g in a flat disc.

Because it needs no anchor at all, it suits a hostel floor, a friend's spare mattress, a van conversion or a field camp, where drilling a hook is not an option.

Coated or uncoated

Both the Traccia and the Domo Pop are sold as permethrin-coated nets. The coating is bound into the 156-count polyester fibre during manufacture rather than sprayed on, so it stays in the yarn and does not release into the air inside the net.

If you would rather carry a barrier with no coating, the uncoated Igloo pop-up tent and the Volto head net use the same fine mesh with nothing on it.

Pack and pitch

Tuck the hem under the mattress on both sides and at the foot to close the envelope. Inspect the mesh for snags before each trip and repair small damage with a repair kit.

A packed travel net takes up almost no space, so it can live in a daypack between trips and come out the moment a room has no net of its own.

Do not wash a coated travel net; washing strips the coating into wastewater. When its three-year effective life ends, replace it rather than washing it.
